#juliosiamonoEuropeans

Giulio Regeni is us Europeans.

On January 25, 2022 from London to Athens, from Paris to Rome, from Belgium to Germany, six years after Giulio Regeni's abduction in Cairo, we launched dozens of eco-balloons with this inscription into the sky. As a reminder that the young researcher's story remains an open challenge to democratic values and the founding principles of the European Union.

EuropaNow! has joined the many other initiatives calling for the addresses of the four Egyptian officials held accountable for the kidnapping and killing of Giulio Regeni to be brought to Italian justice:

Tariq Sabir
Athar Kamel Mohamed Ibrahim
Usham Helmi
Magdi Ibrahim Abdelal Sharif

As European citizens, we must push the institutions of the Union and those of the member countries to exert all necessary political and diplomatic pressure so that this crime does not go unpunished.

Previous mobilizations.
"Truth and justice for Giulio Regeni, a European battle."

Since 2019 we have been promoting the campaign #juliosiamonoEuropeansbecause Italian researcher Giulio Regeni, who was kidnapped in Cairo on January 25, 2016 and left lifeless a week later on the side of an Egyptian road with signs of torture on his body, was a European citizen. Because along with his, the human rights of all of us were violated.

Demanding truth and justice from Egypt should therefore be the European institutions themselves, together with the rulers of the member states. But while on the judicial level the work of the Italian judiciary is moving forward, on the political level in both Italy and Europe, diplomatic prudence and business have so far prevailed in relations with Egypt. This approach can only be changed by a strong mobilization of European civil society.

And it is precisely from this conviction that on January 25 of each year, in addition to supporting Amnesty International's "Truth for Giulio Regeni" campaign, we promote this initiative to inform and raise awareness in Europe. In the spirit of a common battle, because #juliosiamonieruopei.
