For the second year in a row, Europe Day on May 9 is marred by the war in Ukraine unleashed on Feb. 24, 2022 by the Russian regime of Vladimir Putin.
To symbolize the solidarity of European citizens with the Ukrainian people under the bombs, a Ukrainian flag at the center of 27 European banners was displayed at the initiative of the association europaNow! and the Swedish diplomatic representation, on May 9 from 10 a.m. on the facade of the Swedish Embassy in Rome (Piazza Rio di Janeiro 3), Stockholm being the rotating chair of the EU Council.
"This is theday we celebrate Europe Day, and the EU was created to prevent more wars in Europe. Unfortunately, today we have a war in Europe with Russian aggression against Ukraine, and it is more important than ever that the EU stands together for freedom, democracy, and to support Ukraine," commented Swedish Ambassador Jan Björklund as he greeted the long banner of 27 European flags plus the Ukrainian flag in the center, made by europaNow! and unfurled on the façade of the Swedish Embassy.
May 9, Europe Day celebrating the 1950 Schuman Declaration, reminds us that the rejection of wars of aggression and the struggle against totalitarian regimes are the foundations of our common home, which the Ukrainian resistance is helping to defend. We continue to demonstrate brotherhood with the Ukrainian people destined to join as soon as possible the 27 members of our Union of freedom and peace, as symbolized by the large 12-meter flag flying over the Swedish Embassy in Rome.
